New state police patrol unit to target speeding
UPPER FREEHOLD — Asa Anderson, the new station commander at the Hamilton State Police Barracks, assured Township Committee members on July 9 that the New Jersey State Police (NJSP) would continue to provide the township with the same services as in the past.
Anderson reported that the township had 390 calls for state police service in June, including the section of Route I-195 that runs through Upper Freehold. These include four 911 hang-up calls, 39 alarms going off, one disorderly person, two domestic disputes, two theft complaints, one trespass, 18 erratic drivers, 19 people in need of medical assistance, 19 motor vehicle accidents, 122 vehicles stopped by the NJSP, 59 aid to motorists, and 148 property checks.
Response times were all under 10 minutes, Anderson said. He explained that calls into the dispatch center are automatically computerized. At the end of each month, an accountability meeting is held, and any response time over 25 minutes must be justified, he said.
Anderson also noted the fatal accident on Sharon Station Road that claimed the life of a Plumsted woman. He said that Sharon Station Road was a busy road, with many vehicles traveling at excessive speeds. He announced that Troop C would implement a tactical patrol unit, consisting of eight troopers, to patrol the road. The unit will be in the area during morning and evening rush hours, but times will fluctuate so it will not be predictable, he said.
"I hope this will assist in containing the excessive speeding in the area," he said.
Mayor Steve Alexander and Deputy Mayor Stan Moslowski Jr. had met with Anderson last month and asked that the NJSP start patrolling the new middle school under construction on Breza Road. They also requested regular patrols of Meirs Road and Holmes Mill Road. Committeeman Bob Faber said that work being done on Holmes Mill Road was finally completed, and a double line had been painted on it. Moslowski said he was recently parked in someone's driveway on Holmes Mill Road, and now that the road is smooth, he witnessed someone driving down it like it was a racecourse.
