The St. Peters Police Department will join other law enforcement officers across the state this weekend in cracking down on drunken driving.

Police will increase enforcement on Saturday.

"It's never worth the risk to drive while under the influence of drugs or alcohol," Police Chief Tom Bishop said in a news release. "Drivers could lose their license, pay large fines or, worst of all, cause a tragic loss of life."

In 2007, 243 people died on Missouri roads in more than 7,780 alcohol-related traffic crashes resulting in a death or injury, according to the release. That totals one alcohol-related crash every 1.7 hours, according to the release.
