Police Install Bicycle Radar in Beachwood

    Elisa Amigo Fox 8 News

BEACHWOOD, Ohio--- In an effort to improve safety, one local city is cracking down on bicyclists by running radar!

After receiving numerous complaints from walkers and joggers, Beachwood Police installed an automated speed sign along the Beachwood City Park Trail which will show cyclists how fast they are riding. The speed sign, which sits at the edge of Shaker East and Richmond Road, is similar to the type of radar used for cars.

Beachwood Community Services Director Karen Carmen says the goal is for cyclists to travel under 10 mph. Even though police will not issue a citation or a fine, violators may be asked to slow down.

Some joggers who favor the new speed device question whether cyclists will adhere to the rules. "I don't know if anybody will listen, but it's a good idea," said Mark Danaceau.

Cyclist Greg Pites said, "I'm not speeding anyway. If I want to speed, I'm going to get a motorbike."

"It's good. You want to be safe. You don't want people running into each other," said Katherine Burnard.

Beachwood police say two bike accidents have been reported within the past year. In both cases, speed was a factor.

If it were me on a bicycle, I'd be trying to break my own speed record every day.

Under 10 mph on a bike? That's like keeping a car at 25.

I wonder of sales of cordless RDs to the area will start to rise...

x2. Do they really think it won't be used as a challenge? Of course they could just make it go blank above a certain speed. I know a certain guilt sign on a highway nearby that doesn't register anything above 74 in a 55...

Bicyclists are kinda screwed in many places. Too slow for the street but too fast to be on a walking path.

When I visited Mackinac Island, MI, because cars are illegal, everyone gets around on bikes. The tour guide The local island police actually do stand on the sidewalk with a radar gun and clock bicyclists. If you are going more than 15 or 20 they can cite you for your speed.

I would have loved this place when I was racing. I tried many times to get a speeding ticket while on my bicycle. Got several confused looks and 2 warnings. A speeding ticket on a bicycle is like the Holy Grail among racers.

Most Cops had no idea you could go that fast (40+ on a flat road) on a bicycle. The 2 warnings were for passing on a double yellow and speeding 67 in a 45. Both were coming down a mountain and both in the same day by the same Park Police Officer.
