Thumbs down Congressman Proposes Government GPS in All Vehicles

U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore, introduced H.R. 3311 to Congress in July. The bill calls for the funding of a $150 million-plus study of a Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) fee, to ultimately replace the current consumption-based gas tax. The VMT system would require the installation of a GPS transponder in all vehicles. Under the program, when a motorist pulls up to the gas pump, information about when and where the vehicle traveled would be downloaded to the pump. The mileage tax would then be computed and added to the per gallon cost of the gas. In theory, the tax could be increased for travel during peak periods or in areas of higher traffic congestion. Traffic management by Big Brother.

We already have had a glimpse of what other applications can be created for a GPS-based system. Some rental car agencies track the use of their vehicles, and administer extra charges if, for instance, the vehicle crossed state lines. One auto insurance company allows its customers to opt in to a program where vehicle operating data, such as how often and how hard a driver brakes, are downloaded wirelessly. Insurance premiums can be adjusted accordingly.

Other applications are only limited by the imagination of government officials and GPS technology. In this era of cap-and-trade discussions, what about, Henry Lamb asks in WorldNetDaily, “shutting down the vehicle when its allotted emissions cap has been reached?”

Blumenauer’s home state of Oregon ran a VMT tax pilot program in Portland one-and-a-half years ago, when 260 vehicles were equipped with the GPS units and data downloading was done at specially-equipped gas pumps. Oregon estimates full implementation could cost $33 million for the state. Not surprisingly, it has already been suggested that this cost could be offset somewhat by charging vehicle owners for the GPS transponders.

H.R. 3311 has been assigned to the House Subcommittee on Technology and Innovation. Although the timeline for the proposed study of a VMT fee is five to ten years, the time is now to let your Congressional representatives know what you think of intrusive devices that monitor you and your vehicle’s every move.

That's the state that loves SOCIALISM and the Big Brother, 2 years ago driving from Blaine, WA to San Diego I pulled into a gas station in Oregon and they FORCED me to allow a gas attendant to put gas in my car, I had no choice but to accept that, then I found out that in the name of SOCIALISM they force all gas stations (PRIVATE businesses) to hire people to put gas in people's cars, I bet you gotta be a hardcore left-winger to live in that freaking part of the USA!!!

If it's just in Oregon, I got no problem with that, feel free to live there or free to move somewhere else in the country but when you take your freaking left-wing ideology and IMPOSE IT on everybody else in the country to know what I'm doing with my life and/or my car, that requires a MAJOR REVOLUTION scheduled for November 2010!!!

Because they are exempt from most of the laws they vote in.
For example: Taxes. Congress does not have to pay what we do.

Our Senators and Congresswomen do not pay into Social Security and, of course, they do not collect from it.

You see, Social Security benefits were not suitable for persons of their rare elevation in society. They felt they should have a special plan for themselves So, many years ago they voted in their own benefit plan.

In more recent years, no congress person has felt the need to change it. After all, it is a great plan.

For all practical purposes their plan works like this:

When they retire, they continue to draw the same pay until they die.
Except it may increase from time to time for cost of living adjustments. .....

For example, Senator Byrd and Congressman White and their wives may expect to draw $7,800,000.00 (that's Seven Million, Eight-Hundred Thousand Dollars), with their wives drawing $275,000.00 during the last years of their lives. This is calculated on an average life span for each of those two Dignitaries.

Younger Dignitaries who retire at an early age, will receive much more during the rest of their lives.

Their cost for this excellent plan is $0.00. NADA!!! ZILCH!!!

    This little perk they voted for themselves is free to them. You and I pick up the tab for this plan. The funds for this fine retirement plan come directly from the General Funds;

    "OUR TAX DOLLARS AT WORK"!

From our own Social Security Plan, which you and I pay (or have paid) into, every payday until we retire (which amount is matched by our employer), We can expect to get an average of $1,000 per month after retirement.

Or, in other words, we would have to collect our average of $1,000 monthly benefits for 68 years and one (1) month to equal Senator Bill Bradley's benefits!

Social Security could be very good if only one small change were made.

    That change would be to:

Jerk the Golden Fleece Retirement Plan from under the Senators and Congressmen. Put them into the Social Security plan with the rest of us

    Then sit back.....

And see how fast they would fix it!

Oh come on NJ does it and I love it, they pump your gas for you and it cost less then PA or NY or Delaware, Why because they claim that insurance cost for the gas station are less due to trained people pumping gas verses your everyday idiot. I live near a small town in PA and the station there too pump your gas and they are generally $0.10 less a gallon and I do not mind them pumping my gas especially when the weather is bad out.

I don't mind pumping my own gas.
Kind of picky about who touches the car and that goes for the mechanic too.

I can't force you to get off government assistance aka welfare but do NOT force the entire society to depend on the government, government-run healthcare is another example.

And you know, I'm not mentally challenged to have a stranger jumping in front of my car in the middle of the gas station and start pumping gas for me, what's next, not allow to wash my car by myself or change the air filter, government must have no involvement in how a private business (gas stations) operate or how private citizens want to take care of their own life, healthcare included!

I agree w/ RW, telling me I can't pump my own gas is stupid. What if I top off my fuel tank and the person pumping gas doesn't? How do you explain to the gas station attendant you need more fuel? LOL
