Speed traps in in trash bins legal
20.10.2009 16:59The Ministry of Interior and Administration has decided that hiding photo radars in trash bins is legal.
In an attempt to catch drivers who exceed speed limits, policemen from the eastern city of Lublin have installed a photo radar in a trash bin located on a busy street.
On the basis of photos taken by the hidden camera, policemen issued 1300 fines in only two days.
Lublin drivers are outraged, claiming that the aim of a hidden radar is to make money only, not to prevent dangerous driving.
Officers from a traffic department of the Police Headquarters also have doubts as to the use of undercover radars. “Photo radars are expensive and they can be easily damaged if a car accidentally hits a trash bin,” says Marek Kakolewski from the Police Headquarters.
However, the Ministry of Interior and Administration does not forbid placing photo radars in bins. “It is not recommended, but, on the other hand, there is no regulation which bans such practice,” says Wioletta Paprocka from the Interior Ministry. (mg)
