Virginia State Police crack down on HOV violators

    By the Associated Press

    November 4, 2009
ARLINGTON, Va. - Virginia State Police are stepping up enforcement of HOV rules, and they are catching a lot of violators.

On one morning last month, police issued 89 tickets in three hours along interstates 95 and 395. That included two second-time violators and one drunken driver.

From July 26 and Sept. 12, officers focusing on HOV enforcement in northern Virginia issued 2,200 summonses. Last year, the state police issued 18,269 summonses for HOV violations in northern Virginia.

Police say the large-scale enforcement efforts will continue. Violators face a $125 fine for the first offense. The fine doubles with each subsequent offense up to $1,000 for the fourth violation.

My favorite was seeing people with dummys in their car. Not gonna lie, we violated that law all the time when coming through DC into Northern VA but we at least had 2 people...the traffic in Northern VA is outrageous.

HOV is a flawed concept. It does not help traffic or the environment. This fact is proved when on special event days the officials lift HOV lane rules to ease traffic. Just the simple fact that they lift HOV rules to improve traffic flow verifies the system is flawed. HOV is one of the most heaviest enforced violation and it has absolutely nothing to do with safety. It's just a way to use the police to collect extra taxes. When the police stop someone for an HOV violation it slows traffic even more. On top of that the majority of the public is fooled into thinking that HOV is good for the environment. It's actually worse for the environment because all the stop and go cars in the other lanes are on the road a lot longer. Constant stop and go uses more gas than steady cruising speed and the fact that the commute times are a lot longer for all the other lanes with HOV. If the officials were serious on battling the traffic problem they would do away with HOV lanes, just like they do on some days when there is a bad accident in the region or a special event.

Unfortunately, I think that's the intention. The liberal social engineering types want you to go slow unless you carpool. Theoretically, if more people took it as an incentive to carpool then traffic should improve, but obviously it's not working out that way.
