THE average speed cameras on the A80 went live on Monday.

Motorists are now running the gauntlet of 14 cameras between Mollinsburn and Haggs.

But Transport Scotland and Highway Management Scotland say the measures will help ensure the safety of their work crews.

They took action because, they say, so many motorists were ignoring the 40mph speed limit.

According to one report more than 600 motorists had already been fined before the decision was taken to set up cameras.

The upgrade is scheduled for completion in autumn 2011.
