EDMONTON — Starting Wednesday, motorists who speed through certain intersections in the city should watch their mailboxes for hefty fines.
For the last two months, 25 high-traffic intersections in the city have been monitored with traffic safety cameras, which watch for vehicles that speed through any light, be it red, green or amber. Almost 1,000 letters have been sent out during the pilot project.
On Wednesday, the cameras will start spitting out fines, said Gerry Shimko, executive director of the city’s traffic safety office.
“We’ve known from our research that the use of this technology and other speed management technology is a proven technology to save lives,” Shimko said, adding that almost half of Edmonton’s collisions happen in intersections.
The 25 cameras are each denoted by signs, so motorists will have no excuse for getting caught by one, he said.
