RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. - The speed limit on some South Carolina interstates could be 80mph if one lawmaker has his way. Rep. Todd Rutherford, (D) Richland County, has filed a bill that would allow drivers to pick up the pace.
Rutherford said many drivers already go a little over the speed limit. “If we set our speed limit at a reasonable rate, then you can have The Highway Patrol out there policing aggressive driving, policing DUIs. Doing those things that they need to be doing, because we’ve already had cuts in our highway patrol,” said Rutherford.
People who support raising the speed limit told FOX Charlotte it is because many drivers drive above the speed limit. “In reality you’re seeing excess of the posted speed limits today,” said one driver.
That’s also the reason other drivers are against it, they’re concerned if the speed limit is bumped up to 80, people would go even faster. “What’s going to be next, 90? I just don’t think it’s right,” said another driver.
Tom Crosby with AAA Carolinas said if the speed limit goes up, so will the number of accidents. “At least one-third of every fatal accident in South Carolina involves speeding. People can’t control their cars at those kinds of speeds,” he said.
The bill will be looked at in committee when the South Carolina Legislature goes back in to session in January.
