Highway Patrol Issues 138 Speeding citations
    by St. Joseph News-Press
    Tuesday, December 1, 2009

Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers were stretched out between the southern Buchanan County line to the Iowa border last Wednesday and Sunday.

The patrol had an officer every 10 miles from noon to midnight Wednesday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, said Sgt. Sheldon Lyon, a spokesman for Troop H in St. Joseph.

Troopers made one driving while intoxicated arrest, issued 138 citations for speeding and issued 289 warnings, said Capt. Duane Robinson, Troop H commanding officer.

The troop also issued one speeding citation to a truck driver, had four incidents where drivers were operating motor vehicles in a hazardous manner, four other violations for non-moving incidents, issued eight citations for driver’s license violations, cited five drivers for failure to maintain insurance, served seven misdemeanor warrants and cited 16 drivers for seat belt violations.

There were no traffic fatalities in the Troop H area during the Thanksgiving weekend.

Let's see... 138 speeding tickets, one DWI, and 4 driving in a hazardous manner... I bet the vast majority of the 289 warnings were for "speeding" too.

I guess that's further proof that "speeding != hazardous"... and it also shows that they were out there to raise revenue and not to make the roads safer. After all, they could have issued 500+ "hazardous driving" tickets if they really wanted to make the roads safer, considering how bad the majority of the population drive. And that's without bothering any speeders. Most of the "hazardous" drivers are driving too slow for conditions, especially in the left lane.

I'll bet the PSL is well below the 85th percentile speed too, so it was like shooting fish in a barrel.

If I'm passing you on the right, YOU are in the wrong lane!

If speed kills, how come I'm still alive?

Drivers are driving to slow in the left hand lane and staying to long. I could not have said it any better. You have hit it on the nose kpatz. So much for making our roads safer instead lets make more revenue.

    Talk about under posted psl.
I'll never forget the time I was stuck in traffic on an overpass so I started shooing the Bushnell at traffic below. The average speed was 78 plus or minus a few one after another. O yea, the PSL was 60 mph. The funny part is this was just a few miles from the HP's HQ in Weldon Springs. For the local guys this was in the Valley shooting EB traffic as the came of the bridge. I was on the overpass that takes you on WB 40.

Another thought, it must be embarrassing get caught and being a trucker.

Especially since it's not easy to get those rigs moving fast. It must have been an underposted PSL.

Another thing I thought of regarding the lack of enforcement of slow drivers in the passing lane: If LEOs enforced this and people learned proper lane etiquette, there'd be more speeders, meaning more work writing tickets. LEOs are lazy, so they let the LLHs slow traffic.

It is pretty much iPods and Sat radio for the truckers these days.

That's probably a consequence of being governed close to or below the speed limit. The fast ones still listen for the bear reports and I see them slow down when they know there's one nearby.
