TALLAHASSEE -- The Florida Highway Patrol cited almost 8,000 drivers over the Thanksgiving holiday, including almost 6,000 for speeding.
The agency had beefed up its force from Nov. 25-29 by adding troopers who typically perform administrative duties, as well as reservists and auxiliary troopers, to patrol duty.
Troopers issued almost 8,000 traffic citations and made 157 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
They cited almost 6,000 drivers for speeding. Florida has 67 counties, meaning that troopers cited an average of 90 drivers per county for speeding over the five days, an average of fewer than one ticket per hour per county.
Troopers also issued almost 1,400 tickets for failure to buckle up.
Troopers assisted more than 4,000 motorists and worked crashes that resulted in 21 fatalities.
