Vt. Police Step Up Holiday Patrols
Williston, Vermont - December 11, 2009
Police are stepping up patrols during the busy holiday travel season.
Vermont State police are teaming up with local police departments to hold several DUI checkpoints around Vermont. They will take place through Christmas and New Year's.
Last year 73 people died on Vermont roads. So far this year there have been 67 fatalities. Safety officials say many lives would be saved if people stopped driving drunk, buckled up and slowed down.
"If one bus crashed or any incident happened that killed 62 people we would be in an uproar, but society and the state and all the states in the country seem to accept a certain level of death and injury on the highway and we'd like to change that," said Steve Reckers of the Vt. Governor's Highway Safety Program.
Sixteen percent of all fatal crashes in Vermont are related to drunk driving.
