Ex-policeman jailed for New Year hit-and-run which killed pedestrian and confined wife to wheelchair

A former police officer who killed a man and left his wife confined to a wheelchair after ploughing into them as they walked home on New Year's Eve was jailed for four years today.

Mohammed Mian, 31, hit Steve Campbell with such force that the impact threw him up into the air and severed his leg. His wife, Rosemary, was left for dead in the road after he drove off without stopping.

Mian, a former Metropolitan Police officer with a string of speeding convictions, was driving at nearly twice the speed limit in a 30mph zone, Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court heard.

Mian admitted one count of causing death by dangerous driving.
