More ’live’ speed traps for Cape Town

Cape Town Traffic announced on Wednesday it was planning to increase the number of speed traps on the road.
Officials believe visible policing was better than cameras on the side of the road, because offenders were ticketed immediately.
The city’s mayoral committee member for Safety and Security JP Smith said they wanted to increase the number of people-driven speed enforcement operations.
“We want to now double up the eleven teams to about twenty two and we’re busy working on that. Certainly by March next year that will be a reality, if not earlier.”
Smith added this was more effective than posting fines to offenders.
“Every time we do speeding enforcement you get pulled over and you get ticketed on the spot; not this camera enforcement where you get the offence in the post, because I don’t think that actually changes behaviour.”
