Traffic fatalities on Illinois roadways fell below 1,000 for the first time in 88 years, state officials announced today.

Illinois State Police recorded 928 fatalities statewide in 2009, down from 1,043 in 2008 and 1,248 in 2007. This is the first time since 1921 that traffic deaths fell below 1,000, officials said.

Gov. Pat Quinn and State Police Director Jonathon Monken attribute the reduction in traffic deaths to increased seat belt usage and the combined efforts of state and local authorities to focus on common factors that contribute to accidents.

"This is a proud and historic day for the men and women dedicated to traffic safety who have made travelling in our state safer," Quinn said in a news release.

The state recently enacted a law banning motorists from writing or reading text messages while driving.
