On Tuesday AAA of the Carolinas joined South Carolina safety officials to speak about the dangers of texting behind the wheel.
“Texting while driving is the single most dangerous sober activity taking place on South Carolina roads today,” said Dave Parsons with AAA of the Carolinas.
According to AAA of the Carolinas 2,600 people have died in cell phone texting related crashes.
Officials said drivers who use cell phones while driving have the same motor skills as people with a .08 percent blood alcohol content.
AAA of the Carolinas has been working with the South Carolina Highway patrol and state lawmakers to ban drivers from text messaging while driving.
Currently 19 states and the District of Columbia have a ban in place. Critics of a state ban said the law would be enforceable.
“A law against texting while driving will be enforced in the same manner as any other traffic violation,” said Mark Keel with the S.C. Highway Patrol.
^^^^oh no, a traffic violation!!! act as if that is going to stop people haha
