The argument is lame. Their example that a redlight camera could never stop a drunken driver is partially true yet also flawed.

They assume that EVERY drunk driver will be involved in a crash EVERY time they run a redlight.

That is flawed thinking. The redlight cameras could very well catch the same driver numerous times that no collision occurred and even if the driver went on to cause a crash later, there would be more evidence on file to mount a good prosecution for the serious consequences of a later accident.

Without the cameras, the driver might run 10 - 20 who knows how many lights before finally causing an accident.

I agree that it would be very offensive and should be illegal for any city to reduce the length of the yellow light, but because redlight cameras are an in-progress phenomena, laws governing their use as well people's adaptation to them will occur eventually.

I detest big government and privacy invasion...but SOME laws are NEEDED or those who cannot or will not act civilized and respect that they must abide by laws will cause many more fatalities.

Unfortunately, they ARE NEEDED because too many people disregard redlights endangering even more lives than is acceptable. Their solution, removing them, gives every impatient idiot the green light....even on RED.

really? we need these for safety? did you watch the video of the girl blow through the red at a red light intersection and get T-boned? did the camera stop her from blowing through the intersection? did it stop the accident from happening? NO! they don't work for safety and only serve one purpose REVENUE!!!!

Inevetably, the municipaities that host these lights will and do adjust the lights in order to increase revenue. This in and of itself does cause an increase in rear en collisions. About the only benefit I can see os fpr the lawyers and chiropracters whos businesses will improve as a result, but at whos expense?

Just because your city shouldn't tamper with the lights will not prevent them from doing it. Assuming that they will not is flawed thinking, when they have strong incentive to do so.

The best reason to not run a red light has nothing to do with tickets, it is because doing so is extremely dangerous. I think that mist of the instances running red lights that I have witnessed or been involved in had everything to do with driver error. This is not same thing as speeding, which is most often done intentionally. There are many habitual speeders and very few habitual red light runners.

I'd like to disagree more, but dinners ready...lol

Noooooo ???? Revenue? You've GOT to be kidding?

How often do you think that non public city council meetings are focused on "safety" vs "revenue" ?

OF COURSE it's about REVENUE...that's what Government is ALL ABOUT. Where've you been ?

But, sometimes mixed in with the revenue angle is a small bit of incidental safety.
Would you reason that because there are fireman, there will never be a fire. Because there are soldiers, there will never be a war. Then why, because there is a device designed to catch redlight runners, would noone run a redlight?

    Fail.

Of course people will still run redlights. But in addition to fining people who make a habit of it a few other positive benefits might occur.
What about hit and runners who blow an intersection, cause an accident but are still able to leave the scene...in some instances these cameras will help identify the perpetrator. And you've seen the WAY TOO LATE THROUGH THE RED speed demons who selfishly disregard everyone else's safety because they are TOO COOL to stop for a redlight or because they perceive their time is FAR more valuable than everyone else's....or the idiot who, having made a fool of himself for the last few blocks weaving in and out of traffic recklessly is not about to stop for a redlight and allow everyone catch up and laugh at him....no WAY! Don't laugh...you've seen them too.

Is it a perfect system? No.
Will it be abused? Yep. Just like so many positions of authority. Are you really surprised?
Government is ALL ABOUT raising revenue from the subjects....what's new?

My point is that there IS a growing problem at intersections with people disrespecting the rights and space of others and "something" definitely needed to be done. This may not be the perfect solution, but I can live with it until a better one is found. I don't run lights or go fast enough so that I can't reasonably stop for one. Maybe that's why it doesn't bother me as much.

I had asparagus in bernaise sauce, baked potatoes, salad and fresh baked bread. Yum!

    Anyway...

So you think cities will be free to manipulate lights any way they please and endanger the public with 2 or 3 second yellow lights?
Oh boy...I can see LOTS of attorneys licking their chops lining up waiting to go THERE!!!
A legal feeding frenzy. I don't think so. Some stupid towns may actually try it and some will get away with it for a while, but it won't be as common as you seem to think.

I think people who blow through intersections (or make traffic errors as you call them) do so more regularly than others. People who drive carefully (most people) don't often forget to stop at redlights. So I think your "error" group is a very busy (and dangerous) group in need of an occasional "friendly" reminder.
