Great news! But I guess I don't understand why the legislature has to pass a bill to allow this. What law currently exists that prohibits it?

Connecticut is one of the few 2 party consent states for recording conversations. You can record video as long as no audio is recorded. This would give the public an exemption to that law.

NYS is 1-party, but more and more bills like this anywhere (should they become laws) are positive.

Maybe it's just a poorly written article, but the bill seems to be aimed specifically at allowing lawsuits, not at allowing taping. That is why I am confused.

Hmmm, you're right. That is one thing the US doesn't need more of... lawsuits. I am going to guess due to the brevity of the article as well... its just poorly written. They didn't elaborate enough, but some more news outlets should catch wind of this and write more.

Unfortunately, I don't think any of it makes any difference for the citizen. Cops will still make unconstitutional arrests. Prosecutors will still refuse to prosecute them. And lawyers will still be the only ones to profit from lawsuits, and then use that money to run for office, where they will perpetuate the status quo.

    Kill them all.

Under United States federal law and most state laws there is nothing illegal about one of the parties to a telephone call recording the conversation, or giving permission for calls to be recorded or permitting their telephone line to be tapped. However, several states (i.e., California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Washington) require that all parties consent when one party wants to record a telephone conversation.
