The Senate on Thursday voted to prohibit the use of photo radar to issue citations to speeders on controlled-access freeways, a ban that would cover a system recently put into use by the city of Scottsdale along part of Loop 101.

However, the bill (SB1146) was amended last week to delay its implementation until Dec. 31.

The Senates 17-11 vote sent the bill to the House.

Scottsdale and five other cities Chandler, Mesa, Paradise Valley, Phoenix and Tempe have authorized use of photo radar on local streets, but only Scottsdale uses it on a highway, according to a legislative staff memo.
