Default needs to be talked about again.. welding helmet as plates

Been thinking about this for sometime now.

my problem- is where to find something that is wide enought to cover the complete plate.

    my thoughts- http://www.drillspot.com/pimages/2130/213045_300.jpg
if you look at the helmet.. my idea would be to use one that is battery powered. so that way you can solder in dc voltage(with voltsage reg to control and give correct volts to panel) from the car to power it.

second in regards to the solar panel. well we all know its job is to dims the glass. so instead of having it work like that my idea would be to bypass the solar panel and have it work on a switch. so we can control when it when to go dark.

love to get some feedback from ya

My guess is this is supposed to offer lidar protection. To me it's a nonstarter. First, having a cover over the plate that darkens would almost certainly be illegal nearly everywhere. Second, if you wire it to a switch for manual activation, once you're alerted to lidar and hit the switch it's too late and any advantage is lost. Third, if you have a jammer you should slow to ~psl then kill the jammer. That seems like too many switches to worry about and too much to focus on. In a close encounter you've just darkened your plate and possibly jtg'd the leo. You may escape a speeding ticket but that might be the least of your worries.

This is just my take. Someone else may have a better, more informed opinion.

This wouldn't be for lidar, it would be for cameras. There's another thread on the topic of using welders' glass as an anti-camera plate cover.

Of course, I can't find that thread now...

    FYI for Rebmemmurof,

This idea was tossed around by me a few weeks ago. Not as lidar protection (because the glass is going to reflect lidar). Rather as protection against red-light cameras. A flash calibrated light sensor sets it off. It goes dark in 2-3 milliseconds and stays dark for about 100 milliseconds. Long enough to ruin the photo exposure, but so fast you'd have to be looking right at the plate expecting it to go dark in order to see it. Plus the flash is going to mask the dark period to most eyes.

This concept taken to a whole new, automated level:

Just found the first half of the solution:

Anyone who has ever used an AutoDark welding helmet can tell you direct sunlight will darken them, I don't see this working on a plate without some serious electronic revision.

That was part of the discussion the other thread.... using a sensor specifically calibrated to flashes from the camera, not the sensor from the helmet. Fortunately in Georgia many red light cameras are being removed (most in my area already) since the legislature passed a law requiring a minimum 3 second yellow light. Seems all the revenue potential has gone away from these supposed "safety" devices!

    kpatz and chariot,

Thanks for setting me straight. That makes infinitely more sense and if the technical hurdles could be overcome, sounds like a very elegant solution, not as much as removing the cameras but still very good.

    autobel,

In that case it seems to me the only obstacles are resources and ingenuity. This sounds like a terrific project. Good luck!

That video above would pretty much do it.
