Any info on the locations? Just downtown or inside the loop?
From my travels, I would agree the red light running problem in Houston has been much worse than other places. I notice the "rat lights" up on intersections about a year ago.
Right now down town only & the locations have not been made public. This month is "test & tune" only. Tickets go out starting December 1.
We've had them in Toronto for about 3-4 years now... about 10-15 different locations for a city alike Chicago... also each location has a prewarning sign, about 100 ft before the camera, where it says "red-light camera ahead"... I bet now everybody knows each location, at least I do, but also I have never and never will run a red light, that's just STUPID and SENSELESS... the camera starts taking pictures ONLY AFTER the light turns RED, so you can cross the intersection on AMBER light, the light might turn red while you are somewhere in the middle of the intersection (happened to me lots of times), important is not to drive into the intersection AFTER the light turned RED, that's when the camera will take your picture!
I remember a guy in Toronto no less sued the city, since they had a boulevard with several lights. And the yellows were all 3 seconds long. Except one of them. Which was 1 second duration. And it had a red light camera.
There is just as much abuse of redlight cameras as speed limits. Don't underestimate the power of the almighty dollar.
