Galveston police cracking down on causeway speeders

Galveston police are taking aim at drivers who speed across the causeway. Turns out that would be almost everyone.
Lt. Mike Riedel said he conducted traffic surveys last month on the causeway, Harborside Drive and Seawall Boulevard.
Only 20 percent of drivers on Harborside obeyed the 45 mph speed limit. That was the best news Riedel got about island drivers.
On Seawall Boulevard, only 13 percent of motorists were driving within the speed limit.
Meanwhile, on the causeway, it was only four percent.
However, through a grant of more than $100,000 from the Texas Department of Transportation, police here have a new weapon in their campaign to promote safe, slower driving. It is a radar device using laser technology to identify speeders.
The state transportation department requested Galveston lower the causeway’s speed limit to 50 mph from 60 mph in January 2004 for the safety of the workers on the bridge.
The causeway ins undergoing a major expansion with the construction of two new spans of the bridge that links the island to the mainland.
