I am new to the Beltronics radar detectors. Should I purchase the 995 or go for the cheaper 955. The additional cost is not an issue, but will I use the extra features. If the performance in detecting is the same, is it worth it to upgrade to a 995?

Trojanboy,
I'm certainly not an expert on rd's as I just bought mine yesterday. However I can say I was considering both the 955 & 995 too. I ended up spending the extra $50 on the 995. I like the better power cable and the soft carry case is nice. Also, I liked the "Expert" mode display option on the 995. But from what I have read, they both perform the same.

Mr. Trojan, BEL has a decent comparison chart for their various units at their website. It seems like the mid-pack group of detectors share the same internals meaning you're paying the extra $$$ for very specific features. Bottom line: the $125 detector is expected to offer identical performance to the 995. Savvy?
This is true. They do all perform the same however, I went to the 995 for the added features. The ability to shut of bands (X band in particular) and the tech display.
As many have said they all perform the same.
However now that the 955 is on sale for 149.99 and the 995 for 199.99 there's only $50.00 difference.
What you get more compared to the 955.
The 995 comes in silver and the 955 in black. Both have the chrome top. I prefer the black of the 955 but that's personal and only a cosmetic problem.
The 995 comes with a Coiled Smart Plug™High Performance Cord which has a mute button, red alert light and green power light on the lighter plug. It's also a tad longer as the standard one that comes with the 955.
The 995 comes with a soft travel case.
The 995 has selectable bands. Compared to the 955 you have the added option to disable X, K, KA, KU and Laser. With the 955 you can only disable X band when using City No X but you can still disable POP and SWS.
The 995 has KU band which is only used in Europe.
The 995 has Tech Mode. Or you choose tech mode and get to see to see the frequency or you use the standard signal meter and you get the bar graph strength signal dots. I personally like to see the dots.
The 995 has a volt meter display.
I think that summons it up. I'm sure if I forgot something somebody will say so.
Is all that worth $50.00.
If the difference would be $100 or more I would personally not go for it. But $50.00 difference is definitely worth thinking about.
Just wanted to throw in the fact that the V940 also performs the same as the above mentioned RDs, as well as the V965.
Of course, the V940 has the least features of the group, but it still has a LoX option if X doors are an annoyance. You can turn off POP and SWS. Really, it has the basic features of what one really needs in a radar detector, and for the price, one can't complain.
As a side note my sis has a V940 and my dad has a V965 (bought before I found out they were all the same.) Featurewise, they are basically the same (at least for the ones I care for), except that with the V965, you can turn off X with CityNoX, while the V950 only has CityLoX.
Thanks to all for the invaluable information. I purchased the V995 today. Can't wait to get my first save.

I would seriously consider the extended warranty for $29.99 direct from Beltronics. It gives you a full 3 years of warranty coverage and is well worth it in my opinion.
Check out the GOL test, you may have wished you got the 955.
not worth it at all.
