is it possible to use GPS tech used in some RD's to display distance from the radar source? if not exact distance atleast an approx distance....
this will be awesome to judge if it is a door opener or a real police signal at a distance.
i hope some RD companies currently using gps in their rd's can try to figure out this possibilty.
The only way that would work is if the location of the radar source is known, such as a fixed-location drone or door opener programmed into the GPS's memory.
Speed traps are constantly moving from place to place, and signal strength can't be used as a reliable distance determination due to reflections, antenna angle, different output power of different guns, etc.
how about estmate the distance based on ...
this is how my theory goes...
my rd detects a moving radar signal at say 1500 ft , it waits to get second beep at 1450 ft then it will take the gps info from ur location and map of the street which are already mapped in most gps units and calculate.
since some RD's even measure the speed of ur car and combine with the detected signals, gps map info it should be possible to approximate the distance.
nobody is saying exact distance but it is better to know if it is 100 ft or 1400 ft away.
How is a receive only unit going to know how far away the source is?
just like we use gmaps to measure distance, it could use the inbuilt gps mapping of usa, which is already available to measure the distance from your gps loacation to the approximate loaction from mapping databse.
it could use the time it is taking to get the signal, it could average the distnace from a 5 point rd signal aquisition from the time it recieves the first beep to the fifth beep.
The 9500I counts down the distance when it’s within 1/2mi or so form a marked location. And TrueLock is signal strength sensitive to create a lock out radius.
So essentially we have what your looking for, it just needs to be refined if it hasn’t already with the xi.
