Amazing detector... bottom line. I own a Rev. 5 and wouldn't get rid of it for anything. IMO its the pinnacle of price vs performance(features).
You will do well with it and always remember to use a rabbit, and that its a radar detector, not an LEO detector.
BTW: I am from NY also... welcome to the board.

Welcome. I just picked up an X50 myself and am getting use to it compared to my old 8500.

Ive seen some people say the the x50 is the same as the bel v955 in terms of performance detection..is that true??? i mean the x50 is over $100 more?? i personally think the x50 has better range than the 955
Re: New to Escort 8500 X50
Second the X50 being an amazing radar detector. I've been using it for almost a month now and I can almost always tell where the radar is coming from, very few falses. Most people here will tell you run with POP detection off but I've had only one false alert on mine the entire time I've been using it. I figure it can't hurt to turn it on.
If you run with loud music on, definitely turn on "loud" tones in the menu. It makes a surprisingly large difference in being able to hear the detector over music. Personally I found AutoMute to be mostly useless since anything that stays in range long enough for it to turn the volume down is likely a LEO and something I want to hear on full volume.
Also, I would definitely check out the Expert Display mode after you get used to the audible warnings. It's very handy for telling the difference between that stationary radar you see every day and the cop hiding next to it!
Re: New to Escort 8500 X50
Agree, it is a great RD for the price. Turn POP off, mount it high, hardwire it, use a rabbit. I like expert mode with scanning dots. Mine once froze up from heat problems, without the moving dots I would never have known. So I advise to take it down in severe heat. Few pics of my mounting in my link. Good luck with it.
