It stands for the frequency, kind of like on the FM dial of a radio, only radar frequencies are a LOT higher.

X-Band = 10.525 GHz +/- 25 MHz
Oldest radar band still in use, but not often. Only a few state police still use X-band, including Ohio and New Jersey, but some local jurisdications might also use X-Band as well.

K-Band = 24.150 Ghz +/- 100 Mhz
The majority of the radar units currently on the road are K-Band.

Ka Band = 33.4 Ghz to 36 Ghz
The newest radar units use Ka. Most of the new contracts for radar are for Ka units.

X band is not only for police, it is also used by a lot of motion sensors. For example, when you walk into the grocery store and the door opens for you, most of those use X-Band. Not many police use X-Band, except for a few areas. So when you see X-Band on the detector, it is most likly a nearby motion sensor causing the alert, unless you live in an area where police use X-band.

K Band is also used by motion sensors, but not as often. If you see K-Band on the detector, you should be cautious because a lot of police use K-Band, until you are sure that the alert is from a motion sensor at a nearby business.

Ka Band is only used by police radar. If your detector alerts to Ka band, slow down because it is most likely police! But in some cases people with old detectors in their car can cause a newer detector to alert weak Ka. This is uncommon with the higher end models.
