A power surge fried something. My first V1 was a similar vintage to yours (1.7) and I had the same thing happen after getting a jump start. I wrote to VR and they said something about a memory chip and to send it in. I lived with it for a year or so (hitting the button after power-up to clear the E) and it worked fine for the most part. I ended up doing an upgrade to a 1.8.
Whether you go for a repair or an upgrade, VR will take care of you. And next time you're unhooking batteries or hooking up jumper cables, make sure the V1 is off or unplugged first. ;)
