Default Settings / Observations
I just got my 813 and 864 back from VR and started some comparisons. After experimenting with a few optional settings with Ka guard, K band muting, the elusive “I” feature of 813, and so on…. I think I have decided I like the default settings. I may have to give it some more time, though.
My initial observations are that the 813 responds to K band photo radar sooner than my 864. My thought is that if I decide to go with some form of K band muting, I would miss the K band photo on the Hwy because that signal never spikes at 4 until you are in the van.
Another observation….On my way to work this morning with the 864 I encountered a door opener in a typical spot. This particular location will sometimes show 2 on the bogey counter so when I heard the bogey lock tone it was no big deal….mute…..and move on with your life. Right? No! As I passed the store (muted) the signal strength goes nuts and the forward arrow stays lit. Sure enough there is a LEO using a K Band gun that looks like it was made when Happy Days was still on the air. Once again, I praise the arrows and ask myself why would I mess with the K band settings? Help me think through the reasoning for auto mute on K. I do know that I won’t disable K, that’s just crazy talk.
Wait a minute, maybe I set one for town and one for Hwy, brilliant!!!!!
More comparisons to come.
Re: Default Settings / Observations
K is all the local leo's use in my town (LIDAR rarely)
so did sending it to VR improve your 864s detection? I assume you had a tune-up?

It's hard to say. I had to send in the 813 because it was ignoring K band and the arrows were jacked. The 864 was really pretty solid when I sent it in. It probably didn't need anything. I'll know more when I encounter a pesky photo van. I don't run into K very often that doesn't open a door.

I don't understand why your 3.813 is your back-up V1. Pre-POPs clearly have an advantage. In fact try running it with Ka Guard off and it will smoke your 3.864 on Ka.

I just bought the 3.813. I need time to drive with it and become familiar with its warnings. I bought it because I heard stories just like what you are telling me. Even with the K band acting weird, I took it on a road trip before sending in for a tune and the Ka warnings were impressive. I had loaned my 864 out and did not have it at the time for a comparison. We'll see.

Gotcha.

Not sure what you meant by that but I will admit that I am a bit neurotic and that is why I sent in the 864. I think it is only the folks here on the forum that submit we are wasting time by sending them in. I think VR wants to have good PR and service.
If you are implying that a tune doesn't help then explain my 813 performing perfect now....
I'm not sure VR could improve the reception of K band if I asked them to. I only asked them to ensure it is operating in specs. I think that is a fair request.
All of the companies have stretched the limits of what can be picked up without receiving Martian TV. We are limited to some degree by the physics of RADAR. The signal can only travel so far in an urban setting. In the event we get a line of sight view it is received from a dozen or more miles.
Please expand on what you meant by that statement.....

Ya I'm thinking that just because it will beat the 864, doesn't mean you will want to listen to it.

False alerts really depend on the area you live in. The more RD"s users are around you, the more false alerts. I'll be doing some test of my own once I get a hold of an eccosorb material with Ka guard off and on. I would like to see the difference between distances with Ka guard on and off. If the distance is not that much, I will use default settings. I can't stand the false alert's as well.
