STi-R behind bumper cover?
I am looking for locations to mount my STi-R antenna on my 350Z. It seems that my jammer heads are going to limit my options.
I could go low in the grill, but everything down there feels like it will move at speed. (nothing solid)
The jammer heads are already mounted to the underside of the metal bumper beam, and there isn't much room for the STi-R there.
But, if the plastic and paint don't hurt radar reception, I can mount the braket on top of the beam and have the horn looking into the plastic bumper cover and paint. The mount would be rock solid, but the bumper and paint will always be between the horn and the radar source.
I thought veil guy did this on a BMW.
Any thoughts?
Re: STi-R behind bumper cover?
Would you mind posting a picture of your vehicle? I'm looking at your signature picture and it looks like there is room in between the jammer heads. Another option you can consider is mounting the antenna in the cabin of your vehicle.
Re: STi-R behind bumper cover?
I'll get a pic of of my install when I get the chance. I have my antenna mounted on the huge piece of aluminum that the tow hook is attached to. It doesn't get much more solid than that.
It required me taking off my bumper and such, but it was well worth it.
EDIT: It's probably important for me to note that I have a Z also.
Re: STi-R behind bumper cover?
Since it will be a while since I can get a decent pic... I'll go ahead and explain now.
The STi-R kit comes with a big black square bracket. I took off the bumper cover and screwed that bracket directly covering the tow hook hole... the bottom of the bracket hangs below the hook just far enough where the other u-shaped bracket has enough room to have the antenna hang below it.
Anyway, right now the tow hook hole is covered, but I plan on going back and drilling a big hold into the bracket so the hook can fit in to place if it's ever needed.
Hope that helps.

I was looking at mounting the flat plate on the back of the tow hook. If I had a right angle drill, I could probably do it without removing the bumper cover, but I don't want to buy an expensive tool just for one job.
Re: STi-R behind bumper cover?
Have you considered mounting it vertically on the left or right inside of that grille area?

Actually you can buy a right angle drill attachment, check home depot and sears, about 20 bucks.
Re: STi-R behind bumper cover?
You will be good behind the plastic bumper cover as long as you are sure that there is no metal supports in front of the receiver. I have an STi-R receiver mounted behind a plastic fascia w/factory metal flake paint and the difference in detection between this mounting position and when it was out in the open was extremely slight. An added benefit is that it stays out of road debris.
Behind plastic grills seems to present problems on some applications most probably due to the uneven attenuation across the horn. I think djrams80 pointed it out here on this forum with his original Mustang/9500ci install.
I do not recommend mounting the receiver vertically unless your main threat is mobile radar speed camera vans (vertically polarized radar).

Thanks for the info. I will try to get a right angle drill attachment (focal) and mount it out in the open, but it's nice to I have a decent "plan B".
Re: STi-R behind bumper cover?
Z1NONLY,
Did you have any trouble finding the STI-R????
I am also thinking about that setup, was going with the Redline but from what Im hearing so far the STi-R might be the better choice, but since Bell stopped production was a little worried about warrenty issues also, what are thoughts....thanks
