New Driver, New to Detectors from RI
Hello all! I am a new 16 year old driver in the process of purchasing a Crown Vic PI and am looking for a little extra insurance. I get my liscense in September, and have been driving since March under permit with 75 hours already. I guess I already have somewhat of a leadfoot, but I don't go too far over the limit, usually 5, but sometimes I don't realize my speed and go faster than I should. So I'm looking into a RD and need some advice. For my Rhode Island driving, it will mostly consist of highway driving. But off the highway is my real concern. RI is filled with hills, corners, and plenty of speed traps. I need a detector that can sniff these cops out before I get too close. On top of that, my family owns a vacation home in Vermont, 3 hours away. Most of it is hwy driving so I'm not too concerned, but the latter part of the trip is all mountains, and even though cops are sparse out there, they have some good hiding spots.
As a 16 yr old buying a car and with high insurance off the bat, I don't want to spend too much but am willing to spend up to $250. I want something that will work. I've heard good things about the Bel Vector line, preferably the V955, but is it good enough? Anything under $250 is fine, but I need something I can rely on. Oh, and falses don't really bother me, as long as the RD isn't falsing every 100 feet.
Thank you for you help and sorry for having such a long post.
Re: New Driver, New to Detectors from RI
Welcome to the forum. My suggestion would be for a new driver to go slow for the first year. Cops tend to be very harsh on young drivers so good protection is a must have. Look and see if laser is used in your area;)

Hello there....
the Bel is a good choice, I would also recommend looking into the Whistler XTR 695SE, very good RD for the money.

I would say go for the V1 or 8500 x50
Re: New Driver, New to Detectors from RI
Your choices are the Bel 995, 995, One of the Whistler SE series detectors, or the refurb 8500. For the record the bel and escort platforms in this price range perform identically. Any of the listed detectors above would be solid performers.
