Man, you paid an awful lot for your BJ!
I'd NEVER pay for a brake job at a dealership or shop... but I always get quotes when they replace my tires, and last time I went (for all 4) and some lines it was ~$1200. Ouch.
Its simple to do yourself. My wifes SUV took about 30 min each side for rotors and pads.Just my front pads on my honda took about 7 min a piece
Most vehicles have 2 bolts holding on the front caliper and remove those replace pads and get a c-clamp to push the brake piston in so it can fit back over the rotor.
If you are worried about the cost, then definately do it yourself. for my tahoe it was $140 for two front rotors and about $20 for front pads.
I found the youtube videos to be very helpful. The only tricky parts were getting the rusty bolts off (I ended up buying a 2 foot breaker bar for $20) and getting the rotors off. For the rotors I used a trick were you put a bolt through the caliper bracket, and then thread it into a nut. As you tighten it up, it pushes on the rotor and it comes right off like magic! there is a youtube video for this trick as well.
Absolutely, it takes some time if the vehicle you have isn't common or no one did the exact make and model, but I have used Youtube and google relentlessly to never pay for anything on my car that I think I could do myself. You definitely need some starter tools such as 3/8 and 1/2" socket sets, a c clamp, and some courage. You could probably manage to get each brake done in about an hour to an hour an a half if you've never done it. Thanks to google and youtube I managed to even get a timing belt on (8 hours) and drive shaft 2 weeks ago. Research took the longest part of the jobs! Good luck! I just looked up my records and it cost me $193 for all four rotors and brake pads.
I agree that it is possible to change pads and rotors yourself. I did this on my previous car havent had to yet on this one. Rotors can be a ***** with the screws that hold them on. I ran into problems with them. $1000 is ridiculous lmao if you were getting a shop to do it I would expect between $200-$300
Not gonna do it myself, I want it done right and my brakes to work haha and ur 193 price where did u buy ur stuff from
