At this moment and time I would wait to see how the new 3.891 will do on some more testing. It seems like the newest V1 is HOT, but more testing will tell for sure. If testing proves otherwise then I would just Tune it (if required) and go from there.
I have a 3.864 version V1 and will wait to see how the latest and maybe greatest V1 (3.891) will do on more testing myself before I send mine in for upgrade, esp since it's around $139 if memory serves.
I live in NJ as well and own a 3.864 and 3.813. As said above, just wait now since something's been brewing at VR.
I notice a negligible difference on my 3.813 over my 3.864.
NJ is a state where you could get burned with the 3.813 since your state uses X-Band radar.
The 3.813 will fall out of tune on X-Band relatively quickly and you won't even be aware of it.
When you have X-Band (and K-Band) in your area, yearly tune-ups are a must with that particular detector IMO.
I have a 3.813 and I've seen it go completely dead on X-Band. When it stopped picking up the X-Band door openers at my local supermarket I sent it in for a tune-up. Low and behold when it came back I was getting 7 & 8 bogies again like when it was new.
Even though I have X disabled, I check it every few months to make sure it's still performing.
definitely get it tuned... If you are the original owner, it won't cost you anything except shipping to get it there. 3.813 is probably the best pre-pop firmware revision.
I would keep an eye out here and on the V1 site to see what the latest revision is going to bring. If it's as good or better than what the 3.891 is being rated as, then it will be worth your wait.
I have a 3.813 in the truck and a 3.864 in the car ...
