    Default Question for Radar Roy?

Roy, when you used to be an active police officer, if you pulled over someone you just got done radar/lasering, if you noticed that they were using a V1/Bel/Escort, would you let them off or would you stick them w/ a ticket? I know the way they acted has something to do w/ it as well. I know this is a funny question but it has been lurking for quite some time in my head and who better than to ask! Mk

Why on earth would you think a RD be reason to let a person off of a ticket? It certainly won't help your cause to plead your way out of a ticket.

I got pulled over for speeding at night one time and I had a radar detector. While the officer was asking me questions I knew that I had a BBgun in the floor board that looked like a gun. I knew this was not good and if he saw it, he would have drawn his gun and things would have got ugly.

I said hey man I have a BBgun in the floor board it is only a bbgun but it looks real. He shined the light and said ok. I want you to hand me the gun by the muzzle slowly. I did that. After that he went back to the car and came back.

Here is the point of the story. He said I write a ticket to anyone that has a Radar Detector. I am not writing you one becuase of you telling me about the gun. He said slow down. I was shocked

Good story, I would have done the same, and the cop definietly appreciates the curtesy of avoiding a nasty situation.

Well I would base my actions on the attitude of the driver

My specialty was drug enforcement and any stops I would do would be based more upon certain characteristics that would raise a flag that they were transporting drugs as my proximity to the border of Mexico.

One thing, I never found a load vehicle that had a radar detector

The first time I got pulled over, I had a radar detector. Cobra 9110, I sold it shortly there after learning all detectors aren't equal. But anyway, the leo let me go, I had just gotten my license 3 months prior. He told me the radar detector was useless - and well - he wasn't kidding. The POS didn't go off until his lights were on, and it only went level 1. :-(

Right now I'm debating on whether or not its worth getting a rd. I want to because, well they are fun to have. But, I got 5 points on my licence right now, I can't really afford to speed. :-\ W/o the detector - I know I speed less.

I don't understand something. With out a radar detector, you have 5 points on your licence now. Sounds like you need a radar detector and a good one at that, not to mention know how to use one and know its limitations. But your correct at this point you can not risk loosing your license and you should stick to the rules of the road.

But back to your first encounter, what do you believe was the reason why the LEO let you off with a warning? Was he a veteran and just cutting a first time driver a break and offered a leraning lesson instead (obviously it did not work :P ), any other reasons why. I know a rookie cop sure would not have cut you a break.

Yeah, it seems as if the 'Rookie' LEO's are the ones who are extremely hardcore about their tactics, the 'Veterans' seem to be the ones you want to deal with.

Yep. EVERYTIME I have been stopped by a Rookie guarenteed ticket and attitude. Everytime a Veteran, we start talking about cars or something else for a good 20 mins, collect their card, make a new friend and no ticket...
