As of now, I'm under the impression that the local PD, Sheriff's office, or any local LEO would probably either:
A) play dumb, or
B) give false or inaccurate data on purpose (i.e. - LIE)
I've tried asking officers this...and this is the response I have gotten from probably at least 4 out of every 5 officers I've asked. You MIGHT find that one guy who is honest, communicative, and doesn't feel "threatened" to give out this info...but the majority seem to want to keep it a secret. I'm guessing that they are pretty much "on to" anyone asking (i.e. - they KNOW you have a detector, and they don't want to "HELP" you evade those speeding tickets).....
This website is a list of speed traps by state/ county. They are reported by everyday drivers. Might help if there are listings for your county. It tell you what speed measuring devices are used.
I would suggest a couple of things---(1) call the traffic dept and simply ask them what type they use or (2) next time you see a cop woth a unit srtike up a conversation with him/her and inquire as to what type.
It has been posted on here several times, just do a search.Usually the state and county are similar in their equipment most of the time.Finding out what is used in your state can help..

Drive around at the speed limit... and look at your RD as you go through traps until your confident you know what they use.
Its either: K or Ka band (I doubt very much X). Laser is laser, so if you get a laser alert... slow the -beep- down anyways it doesnt matter if you think your local PD uses or doesnt use laser.
You could always ask them... especially if you know any, but like others have said... sometimes they get very protective about that information and just like sportsfan said they may mislead you.
I have tried the dumb civilian routine with good results: I call the traffic department of the local police, and tell them that I have heard that they are using "lasars" to enforce the traffic laws. I then tell them that I am worried that I might get blinded if the "lasar" hits my eyes. The nice officer then carfully explains to the village idiot that it really isn't lasar, and that they do, or do not use it in any case. I then go on in my best "gee wiz" mode to get as much information as I can on what they do use. It has worked everytime, so far.

Haha! Good idea. Ask of the emissions from their Stalker Dual Antenna Radar will cause you cancer.
