    Default Early radar detectors?

I remember my first was some big behemoth radio shack detector that did X&K

    I then did Bel's for a while

    XKLR (something like that)
    Vector 3
    966W
Bel sent me a 745i when my 966W died under warranty
    945Sti
    finally V1

anyone else remember what they first used?

    Cincinnati Microwave Passport 12/85
I needed one earlier as the same city cop got me in the same place a year or two apart. I told him the speed was close to the last time he got me and he said at least you are being consistent.
If that officer only knew what he started.
Got a radar ticket in Nev in 79 and looked at fuzzbusters but money was too tight.
I have somewhat of a led foot and have not had a radar ticket since.

Heh, I had one like 10 years ago for my first car. I don't even remember what kind it was anymore. My parents found it about 6 months after I bought it, and I never saw it again.

    Maxon had one.

Either I or my father has owned a

    Fuzzbuster Cyclops original
    Whistler Spectrum Super Heterodyne
    Whistler Spectrum II
Various Unidens(I seem to remember the one we had were crap and didn't stay long. Which is why I can't remember which one's we had.)
    Original Passport
    Maxon
    Passport 4500
    Passport 4600

Needless to say having a radar detector is something I am very comfortable with. My dad passed away 5 years ago. Last christmas I was taking my mom on a road trip to visit family in Alabama. We were on the road 15 min. and I started to turn the car around. I told her that I need to go back and get the RD unit. She said "Oh yes, we need that". So even she has been trained on the benefits of having the red lights on the windsheild.

What other units has everyone else owned.

My first real job after graduating from high school in '81 was driving around in a car picking up samples for transport to a medical lab, and delivering the result reports to doctor's offices and hospitals.

Monday through Friday I would leave Atlanta, drive up into N. GA and then over into SC before looping back to Atlanta. Hundreds of miles each day on the road with the local PD's and state patrols. Almost every one else doing the same thing had bought a RD of some sort.

I picked up a Fuzzbuster II from a pawn shop, and used it for a while. When most everything was constant on and high power, it usually allowed for adaquate reaction time.

When instant on and pulsed radars started getting common, I bought an Escort. That unit was so much better than the old one I had been using, and everything else on the market at the time. I used it for years afterwards, even when my job no longer required a lot of driving.

Later I picked up a Passport, which was smaller and performed the same as my Escort. I was living in CA which didn't have a lot of radar use at the time.

About the same time as I got a newer car (Mustang Cobra) the CHP started buying radar again, this time new Ka band units which the Passport didn't cover. I bought the V1 and have been very happy with it ever since.

    Howdy,

Way back in 1972, a battery operated S & X band detector, had a antenna you put in the back of it. Name long ago forgotten, used back in the days of the 'silver moon' radar units. which had a analog meter that once you got to the top reading, you pushed a bar that locked the needle to the max speed of the oncoming unit. Most of the radar units back then where constant on. X band only and you could detect them with very basic units without to much problems.

So can anyone remember it or find the name of the unit?

    Take care,

    The "Radar Sentry" maybe?
This had an antenna that connected to the back, detected S and X band, ran off of 2 AA's, and was sold at leat to the mid 70's. There's some pictures of it on a draft page I started on my website about the history of radar detectors (about half way down the page):
