Default Where to mount your detector. . . why here?

Okay. so you are all thinking - geez not this frickin high middle low crap again. We might argue about that and each have our reasons for each. But that ain't what this is about.... We all know that the middle is the best - whether you have a crapra or a v1 and sti. So why do people mount them where the circles are?? I find it a complete waste of a detector and want to smack them silly. its one thing to own a shiiiity detector, its another to not know how to use it.

The vast majority of owners are not informed. Not everyone lives in a radardetector forum.

Why is mounting there "a complete waste of detector" :?:

And "its one thing to own a shiiiity detector, its another to not know how to use it"?

If they own a great detector, but point it a little off center cause they aren't a radar fanatic and would rather have the device not in their field of view, they'll likely still experience better protection than someone else with a $20 Cobra mounted optimally. I mean a lot of people who buy safe cars with TCS, ABS, Stability Control, AWD, etc. may not be any more skilled or smarter as a driver, but those extra capabilities built in to their car make them better protected than an equal or slightly better driver who can only afford a base commuter vehicle w/no PS, PB, ABS, TCS, and only front disc brakes.

Man, you gotta get a life if a non-optimal mounting location gets you that upset. Like mentioned before, not everyone is as informed or even cares about getting every possible inch of detection range from their detector. If a couple 100ft. less range means it can be nestled to the side or hidden from plain sight, a lot of people would easily take the tradeoff.

umm i think its better than someone who hung a really crapy RD on the rear view mirror. it was like dangling like dice in the mirror while the RD was facing the sky. kinda sad...

i always mount mine in the middle however, i don't see how it could drastically change things being mounted where you depict. Especially for on coming radar on a two lane highway.

there was a small speed box thing on a street sign close to my house so i went out to test this theory....i did three runs at the PSL of 20 mph.... i had the x50 mounted in threee spots(low middle high middle and next to the a pillar, about in between the two circles on the picture) they alerted in the order they are listed.... butthe difference between the low middle alerting first to the left side alerting last was not even a tents of a mile.... i was kind of amazed that they alerted so close.....

before i would go bashing every cobra user we see with their rd dangling up towards the sky, keep in mind that most people don't know what to do with them in the first place. mount it somehow, and if it beeps, it has to be a cop. right? WRONG.

I always look on these "where to mount" discussions with a certain amount of envy. It means that you live in a RD friendly place and have all these options. A lot of us don't. I have found though, the better the detector, the less difference it makes. As long as your RD has a clean shot through the windshield, you can mount it high, low, middle, strap it to your head, hold it in your teeth, tape it to your shoulder, the difference in range and quickness in alert is very slight.
( I will admit that holding it in your teeth can get very tiring on a long trip although it makes it easier to pan around to locate those pesky door openers)
