lets say u have a rx65 or a v1..and ur driving down the road and speeding, of course....and u get a full ka signal and its just a cop driving by using instant on...by the time u have recieved the alert, has the radar gun already determined your speed?

By the time your RD has alerted, and you have moved your foot onto the brake, and you have applied enough brake to slow down, your speed will have already been clocked.

As soon as your RD alerts (or even sooner), the officer has your speed. There's no way to evade instant-on except to use a rabbit (follow another speeding car at a safe distance) and hope the rabbit gets hit first (causing your RD to alert before your turn comes up).

    Default KA and instant on

Forgive my ignorance, but is all KA instant on? I sometimes detect what appears to be low level KA in what aI have assumed to be stand-by mode in LEO cars. If I detect full KA is that always instant on, or can it just be that I am in the vacinity of an active KA radar, but not necessarily the target at that point?

No, not all Ka is instant-on. Police radar is either ON or OFF, in "standby" the radar transmitter is completely OFF. So more than likely, you weren't being targeted directly...

Like Jim said (btw, congrats on your 4000th post!) Ka radar, like X or K, can be run in either constant or instant-on. For constant, the LEO turns the transmitter on and leaves it on, and watches the display and traffic to find speeders. For instant-on, they leave the gun in standby (hold) mode, where it doesn't transmit anything, until the LEO wants to clock a vehicle. At that point, (s)he pushes a button or pulls a trigger, which activates the radar transmitter and gets a speed reading almost instantly (hence the term "instant-on").

When in standby, the radar isn't transmitting anything at all. I have 2 radar units (a K-55 K-band and a Stalker ATR Ka-band), and when in standby my V1 remains silent even though the radar is inches away. There's no "leakage" for a RD to pick up, until I hit that transmit button. At that point it's too late--in my experimentation the radar has a speed displayed as soon as the V1 starts sounding.

Even my old school Falcon gets a speed as soon as I pull the trigger, most of the time.
Outside Independence Hall when the Constitutional Convention of 1787 ended, Mrs. Powel of Philadelphia asked Benjamin Franklin, "Well, Doctor, what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?" With no hesitation whatsoever, Franklin responded, "A republic, if you can keep it."
