Default Why do we bother with Laser sensors in our RD's?

With radar we're looking for advanced warning so that we get everything shipshape before the LEO comes into view. With laser we've got between a vanishingly slim chance and close to no chance (depending on detector) of getting anything like that. So what's the point?

With my STi I'm pretty sure if I was shot I'd get an alert. Advanced warning? The remotest chance.

With my V1 I'd be confident if I was shot it'd let me know. Advanced warning? Maybe three or four times the remotest chance? Still next to no chance. Problem is that to acieve this level of incompetence they've wound the sensitivity up to the point that it will false alert to... my DVD/SatNav, every traffic sign that uses LED's, the brake lights of some cars, the headlights of others and the cruise control of yet more road users. And out of this stew of garbage I'm supposed to pick the once in a blue moon advanced warning of a real LEO? Isn't this the worst of all possible worlds? Next to no protection and bucketloads of falses?

So why do we persist in comparing the laser capabilities of the various detectors as though it actually translates into anything really useful on the highway when in actual fact they're all various shades of rubbish?

because if you get veil, your detector would pickup the laser a few seconds(maybe 3-5) before the cop actually gets a reading .. i think =]

Even if I dont get enough warning to slow down to the PSL, I would still want to know its out there and being used.

Of course we all know that if laser is a big concern, a jammer is the best way to go.

But, although not nearly as effective as a jammer, a radar detector can provide you with a level of protection against laser in a couple of different ways:

If you have a vehicle that is difficult to target with laser, such as a black vehicle with pop-up headlights and no front plate, some laser guns cannot get a reading until you get to closer range, for example 500 feet. If you get targeted with laser at say 1000 feet, your detector will alert you and you'll have some time to slow down before you get close enough for them to get a reading. Products such as VEIL or a Laser Shield can help to cut the range down.

In some limited cases, you might get lucky and detect some "scatter" when a vehicle ahead of you is targeted.

Well we're not exactly getting ringing endorsements for the effectiveness of our various detectors are we?

I've been saved by the Veil, Lasershield, Blinder combo but I don't think I've ever picked up a warning ahead of time. There was an occasion once with the V1... but when I get hit there's such a racket from the detector and the Blinder that it's hard to remember the sequence it all occured in once I get over the threat of an imminent cardiac arrest.

Unfortunately my car is neither black, nor with pop up headlights and I do have to have a front license plate. So I guess I'm a sitting duck.

You're being pretty cagey with those "some limited cases" Jim. Would you care to put a figure on them?

Would we be more successful with appropriate sacrifices to the Gods of Laser? Maybe GOL could investigate?

I for one am happy that I at least have a slight chance at a laser warning, although I have yet to encounter a real laser alert

The V1's laser detection has saved me 4 or 5 times (my old rx65 did once also). It was in heavy traffic thou. If it's you the cop one on one Mr plod's gonna win every time.
So a good jammers the go if you have the buck's. Ive got veil but it really Fcuked up the crome on my mercedes thats for sure.

Even if the protection is absolutely minimal... I'd rather have my RD alert me when in fact I'm getting hit by laser than not. Even if that alert is just to tell me I'm toast... I can get on the brakes (while hoping he somehow didn't get a lock) and/or look to see where he is so that next time I can anticipate and be better prepared for a repeat encounter.
