Ok, so one of the problems I've been faced while trying to pick out the best detector to buy was the fact that the RX-65 is awesome on everything... except laser. Originally I wanted the V1 because of its magnificents on laser but seems to be having some other issues right now that I'd rather not bother with. The X50 is fine too but the RX-65 does better on Ka from what I've heard, so anyways...
I want to get an RX-65, but I was wondering if this would work, ok, check out the pics, I found an old Escort Laser detector (doesn't detect radar just laser) that someone was throwing in the trash, so naturally I took it.
Here's a better picture of what's on the back:
So anyways, my plan is to have the RX-65 mounted above my rear view mirror, and then mount this either high or low, depending on how good/bad the RX-65 is on laser. I've heard conflicting stories so if anyone knows the final verdict on the RX-65 laser issue tell me. I prefer advanced warning if possible, so if the laser isn't that great on the RX-65, I might try to integrate this into my rearview mirror, that way this thing will be looking through the windows of the cars ahead of me. If the laser detection on the RX-65 is pretty good, then I can mount it low, or take it all apart and put the sensor over my front license plate and put the audio alerts inside the car.
I'm renovating my radar/laser detector defense in my car so now to explain what I meant by integrating the laser detector into my rear view mirror. My rear view mirror is pretty thick, so I might crack it open and see if there is any room inside for some circuitry, if there is I might try taking the guts out of the laser detector and mounting them inside my mirror, the I'll drill a hole in the back of the mirror for the optical sensor, and I'll mount the display on the bottom of my mirror. I'm also half tempted to do a mirror etch like those V1 mirror displays for the display of the laser detector, but that's only a maybe.
So my question is, what do you think? And also, does anyone have experience with a standalone laser detector like the one I have? Is it any good? I noticed that the optical sensor on this thing is huge, much bigger than the optical sensor on any radar detector I've ever seen. I'm thinking this would make it more sensitive. Also, because of the age of this unit, laser has always been the same right? They haven't broadened the nm range they use or anything right? I doubt it, but I wanted to make sure. And also note I'm trying to keep it stealthy, that's one of the main reasons I want to integrate the laser detector, if possible, into my mirror.
Tell me what you think!
Thanks!
BTW: If you click on the images they open in a new window and at a better size, that way you can see the detail much better.
