Ok so here is the story. I should also add that I've been lurking on here for the last several days doing a LOT of reading. This post will be long, but I think it's worth the read. If you just want to read the cliffs...they'll be at the bottom.
I bought a Escort 8500 X50 a little more than two years ago. I got it from Best Buy with a 2 year product service plan with an employee discount, so I got a great deal on it. It was a great detector for the most part. I always drove with the Highway setting on because for the most part it was pretty quiet, even around shopping malls. And the beauty was that it had the auto-mute setting, so I didn't always have to reach over and hit the mute button. The only thing that really frustrated me about it was the fact that it rattled quite a bit (I drive an acura integra..so my car doesn't ride like a benz).
Well about a month or two ago it starting giving me funny false lasers (in my driveway not even moving) but I kept it because I wasn't sure what I wanted to do at the time. I took it with me on a 2600 mile trip recently (Oregon to Socal, to Vegas, to Socal, and back) and it did a great job. It picked up a LOT of CHP hiding trying to give out tickets. I probably avoided a total of 10-12 encounters with the law. However, on the way back my friend was driving and we got nailed with an instant on Ka coming over the hill. My friend was doing over 100 (aprox. 105) and when the cop finally caught up to us he saw my radar detector, and wrote my friend for 79 in a 70 because I think thats what he got him at because we slowed down so quickly. BTW he was probably the nicest cop. He even goes, "I know you were going a lot faster than what I got you at, but I guess it's nice to have one of these on board," as he pointed at my escort.
I've personally never gotten a speeding ticket. Ever. My radar detector has done it's job as many "rabbits" have gotten ticekts. This made me start to wonder though, "What if that was me driving? Would I have gone over the hill that fast? If so I would have gotten the ticket. What if I had a valentine One, maybe it could have been avoided all together." So I went home, and returned the 8500 X50 to best buy, and got a brand new one. It's basically a straight up exchange. Then I went online and bought a Valentine One. The idea was to sell the X50 for about 230-240 (about 50-60 more than I payed for it WITH the 2 year warranty) and use that money to offset the cost of the Valentine One.
Well I got the Valentine One. And I'm not so sure I like it. What seems to be killing me the most is the lack of filtering/auto-mute. If it had an auo-mute maybe I would be ok with it, but it is ALWAYS going off. Even on the highway, if the highway is near any kind of shopping malls to the side, it's picking them up like crazy. My Escort never did that. I should also add that I've reprogrammed the V1 via the "tutorial" in the valentine one sub-forum. But still..it's driving me batty! If I set the Valentine One to "large L" in the city it's pretty darn quiet...but now I don't know if I'm limiting myself in detection ability. The escort ran at full sensitivity ALL the time without ANY issues!
So now I'm at the point where I don't know what to do. I want the best protection, but I want good filtering. I've been reading that the RX-65 has great protection, but call me anal....it's ugly. I really like the way the STi driver looks, and it's supposed to have great protection, but I'm not sure the filtering is as good as the X50. I'm thinking no matter what I'll probably end up returning the valentine. It just drives me too nuts in the city. I've got another 20 days on it. So the question is, should I return the valentine, and open the sealed X50 I got from bestbuy, or should I try and get a better detector like the Sti Driver?
I should also not that the valentine would probably be a lot quieter if I disabled X band, but Oregon still uses X band. And from what I understand if you disable X band, it's disabled even under All Bogeys mode correct? I guess I'm making this point because it would be much nicer to drive around in the cities with X band off, then switch to All bogeys for those highway drives.
Friend got ticket using an older X50...made me consider bettter protection
I have a brand new X50 sealed in box that I got from bestbuy for returning an older X50 (from two years ago - the one my friend got a ticket with)
I also have a brand new Valentine One (3.858) that I've been trying out, but it drives me nuts in the city because its ALWAYS going off- Please read note right above cliffs
I like the RX65s performance, but I think it looks ugly, and thats why I'm considering the Sti Driver
I'm concerned that the Sti's filtering abilities are going to be as bad as the Valentines. I've read some complaints on here, and even Radar Roy says the X50 has better filtering
Should I return the Valentine, get my money back, sell the Escort to a friend, and then get a Sti Driver?
Thanks guys! I admire anybody who actually reads this
