Default What radar detector to get?

After getting my first ticket the other day it's time to invest in a radar detector which would've saved me. Anyway, I don't want to spend over 200 dollars on one and want one that can be easily unplugged and plugged back in. The reason is, I only need it on in certain areas (mainly where I live because the cops have no crime to fight so they just write tickets all day). I haven't done any research into any of them, but I've heard they'll plug into the cigarette lighter. Any advice on which one to get would be appreciated.

    First of all nschuchert, welcome
Most if not all good RD's run off the cigarette lighter, except the remotes. Only the clever dickks here hard wire them for stealth and asthetics. If your spending around $200, this should be enough to buy a decent unit me thinks

I was going to reply with my own words till I remembered this sticky and I figured he explained it better than I could so here is jdreynss' answer to your question.

    3. What is the best detector/which detector is right for me??

Bel makes several models below the Rx65 that are very solid performers, such as the V995, V955, V940..These models run anywhere from $150.00-300.00 on average. Whistler makes some decent units such as the Pro58, and pro73. The Pro58 can be had for around $100.00, and both of these have gotten decent reviews. Many people on this board will tell you to never buy a Cobra, because the detection range is short, and sometimes they will set off the top 3 detectors because they leak their signal. I would say that a Cobra, couple with alert driving, is better than nothing at all...but the whistler would be a better investment. One thing that everyone here WILL agree on is this...NEVER, under any circumstances, should you purchase a product from Rocky Mountain Radar. These products DO NOT work as advertised, and you would be better served by flushing your money down a toilet.[quote]

It sounds like the best place for you to start looking would be with the Whistler products on Roy's page.

The Pro-73 is an excellent unit and is within your pricerange.

Roy also sells the Cobra 9730 which is also within your budget, but is generally not quite as highly rated as the Pro-73.

I can vouch for the Pro-73. The Pro-73 Will give you great detection and enough time to slow down. My Pro-73 works excellent.

Like stated above Cobras will cause it to false though on either K band or Ka band but this happens with all the other top RDs  .

For $145 you can't go wrong with the Pro-73.

Pro-73 for the win! I have one and love it. For under $200, IMHO, it can't be beat.

Do NOT buy an RD off e-bay.

One of my buddies has a Pro 73 and he has been more than pleased with
it's performance. Honestly for 145.00 you can't beat it's detection range.
The blue display is a nice bonus as well.

Stealthcb had a good point. Stay away from ebay when buying
    a detector.

Here's a nice video of the Pro 73 in action that compu44 put on
YouTube. This was against K Band. It's at night and a little
hard to see but you'll get an idea of it's range.

I'm liking the Whistler Pro-73 you guys are talking about. If I bought that would I need to buy anything else (to mount it in the car, cords, etc) to have it up and running? Thanks for the advice guys!

Nope. Comes with everything you need to mount and run it:

Windshield mounting bracket & suction cups
Straight corded power cord (cig. lighter)
No slip dash pad which can be used for dash mounting - Not Recommended personally (Using it to currently hold my bobble head turtles on the dash )
A hard wire kit if you decide to wire it to your fuse box (great to keep cords from hanging everywhere)

When you get it, you might have to bend the windshield bracket a little to make it straight because every car makes windshield is different, you want to make sure it's level with the road and not pointing up at the sky or down towards your hood.

Best mounting position for me is next to my rear view mirror right below the tint strip for the laser sensors.
