    Default The Venerable FUZZBUSTER!

Ah....the good 'ol days. When you could drive 100 mph all day long and have 3 miles of warning before "oinkus" even new what hit him.

1981 I was headed south on 285 from Clines Corners ina 1978 Datsun 280z. I was coming into the village of Encino, NM when this baby started going beep. I looked down at my speedo...I was doing 117 mph. I abruptly applied the brakes as I came through a curve near a building in the microscopic town with NO traffic light.

As I cleared a building there sat "Barnie" with his constant on X band. He was so close to the road I could actually see his red led flashing "32". I looked at my speedo and it showed same. Geesh that would be a sh!tty place to spend the night in jail.

    Thank you FUZZBUSTER!

Nice shot! I was looking at those after I got a ticket in Nev. in 1979. 395 from Lake Tahoe to Reno. Forget the price but It was just too expensive then.

    Jimbonzzz,

No it's just a photo I saw on ebay. Didn't you have one for sale there?

These things were like $200 or something. They were very effective at warning of impending doom. Somethimes if they were hiding in a curve you didn't get a lot of warning (ie my incident at Encino). But usually it was enough to get ya shut down in time if you reacted fast.

God would it be awesome to have a V1 or x50 back then. You'd slaughter 'em. Of course a V1 back then would be a years wages.

    justme,

A fuzzbuster is one of the first detectors. Back when constant X was all they used. I can remember in the early 80's when I had my first encounter with K. It really sucked.

I was zipping along state 190 east of Iraan, TX headed for my favorite fishing spot with dad. He suggested I slow down.

"Nah!" I replied "this thing NEVER fails me." That no sooner came out of my mouth than we popped over a rise and met Mr. DPS. The FuzzBuster was silent. No worries he didn't have his radar on.

YEAH RIGHT. $85 later I came to realize (the hard way) electronic counter measures are not fool proof and that RDs are only ONE tool in the war.

Enjoyed seeing and reading about the Fuzzbuster. I too had one way back. Does anyone remember any detectors put out by Fox?

Regarding older detectors, SML said something interesting in their 2001 test:

"Every day we receive emails...asking which is the best radar detector. If it weren’t for the advent of Ka band, we would have to say the old DSP Escort of 1980’s vintage. All it did was hunt radar and hunt it did. When it barked, you knew "Smokey" was ahead."

I had an Escort DSP for 30 days in 1990 remember you had to put an electronic key into it every 50 hours of use in case it was stolen? Thought the Passport was good enough. Neither one had Ka.

I want to buy a mid-70's original Fuzzbuster (the fake wood version) for my Firebird. Working good is best but I don't care as long as it looks nice. It would be cool to have IMO... (I have the fake wood dash, not the fancy engine-turned aluminum :? )

I know Fuzzbuster once took Escort electronics, stuffed into a fuzzbuster box and gave it to C/D to test in 1979 - and after that they stopped taking detectors from detector companies...
