Default Why has noone ever brought this up about Escort before?

I have had the 8500 since it came out over 4 years ago. Since then, I have contacted Escort several times about varrying issues. What seems to be constant is that their customer service really sucks! It is among the worst of anyI have ever dealt with. I couldn't get any info about the in house testing of their laser jammer and the attitude was so bad that I decided on the blinder system. I asked about a pop upgrade for my 8500 a year ago and was told that there would be an upgrade available LAST September. Then the lady told me that I should send my unit in for a firmware upgrade anyways to be tuned up. I opted not to. Fast forward to today....I called to ask if there were any updates for the original 8500 and the lady told me that they were years away from that, but she would be glad to sell me an 8500 X50. Oh and she told me in no unambiguous terms that there has NEVER been a firmware upgrade to the 8500 (except 1 to make it work with the laser jammer) OR the 8500 X50. I asked her again if she was sure that the original 8500 X50 software was the same as the units that were shipping today and she said absolutely. She also reassured me that it detected ALL laser, including Laser Atlanta Steakth mode and ALL pop. I am seriouslly considering going to the V-1 in a year or so when I am ready to retire my unit. Or, maybe there will be another major player by then. Too bad for Escore because I was happy with the performance of my unit and COULD have been a customer for life. Thank god for competition!

Crazy. Valentine Research won't hand you the blueprints and source code but they're way better than that. When I asked about stealth mode before JTW tested it they told me that they hadn't tested it specifically but that they thought it would and why.

The original 8500 is a very decent detector. My friend has one and I've seen it do some great things. If I were you I'd just wait until it starts throwing error messages and then see what's out. Unless, of course, you think that POP is being used around you.

Does Bel have a different customer service department, or is it the same one as Escort and they just answer the phone with a different greeting?

Ugh. I just ordered an RX65, hopefully I won't need to deal with the manufacturer for a long time.

as with most manufacturers, their technical support is only as good as the person they hired on the phone. For instance: The first person you talk to is usually a book reader, or and idiot who just started and doesn't know anything. This happens a lot especially with HP and various manufacturers.

Unless you have a major issue with like firmware upgrading, always look to the internet for you answer If the person on the phone gives you a hard time, hang up and try the number again, its a computerized system so you'll most likely not get the same person and they might be able to help you more, or you can always ask to speak with a T2 tech or higher.

My dad has a Bel 980 and has never had a problem with their customer service. He has sent his detector in twice, once for warranty and once for a firmware upgrade and has never had a complaint. I don't think you will have a problem with Beltronics.

I think it depends on how the customer representativeís day is going. Iíve had them be very nice and pay for shipping both ways once, and the next time I called they were D#CKS and they only paid for shipping one way.

I was not impressed the last time I chatted with the "Escort" folks.

It's too bad they won't release their source, it would be fun to toy with. Plus an easy way to EEPROM update and we could have some fun. The only reason I can see for not releasing it to the public is so competitors can't use it. I doubt they would care if people like us had it (possibly would void the warrenty though).

Not trying to ruffle any feathers but what is the big deal about not being able to detect Stealth mode?

Yes, the detector can catch some scattered beam from a vehicle it shot in front of you (rarely) If the cop shoots you with laser no matter what it is and your detector goes off, pretty much he already has your speed. I wouldnt rely on a detector for laser detection, buy a laser jammer/veil or plate.
