Recommendation for good detector for speed cameras
Cousin of mine wants to speed a bit but stay out of trouble. Let me lay out the situation.
1. this is for the UAE countries that are using speed cameras (usually vans/suvs/cars parked on the side, locations sometimes change)
2. RDs are illegal
3. details of speed camera unknown
4. No laser in use, no radar in patrol cars, no POP
So I think the following should work:
1. Get an RD that displays what freqs are being used
2. Turn off all freqs except those being used
Budget's tight (but when is it not?), say under $100. Used is fine. I was thinking of the following:
Bel 985 (yes 985 and not the 895)
Bel 990i
Escort 8500 (not the x50 unless I can get a good working model for the price)
Which RD would you recommend?
Patent violations should NOT be the concern of a consumer. Action against the violating company/distributor/reseller is fine, against the consumer is not.

Re: Recommendation for good detector for speed cameras
Well, to be honest the only good detector your going to get under $100.00 dollars is the Whistler Pro 58. It's a good unit but it can be detected by Spectra RDD's if they use them there !!!
I too have to deal with parked Vans using laser then taking your picture as you speed by. A few days later a ticket in the mail comes with your tag enlarged. I've never had one but that's because of playing it safe and having a high end detector. Most detectors are ok with laser but it pretty much means pull over and get your ticket if your speeding. A good Jammer such as the Blinder or the Shifter will take care of that.
Anyways, I would leave all the bands on to be safe.
You may not have X band in your area but it's always
a safe bet to leave it on incase you travel and forget
to turn it back on. I know the Escort X50 and other high
end detectors have a feature called "LoX" where you can
Lower the sensitivity of X.
Since I see that you stated that Detectors are illegal where you live
I suggest The STI. Yes I know you stated your on a budget but
it's well worth the extra cash then being pulled over and getting
a ticket for speeding then another ticket for the detector and
then the Police takes your detector and they will do that in some
places. So spending the extra money for Stealth isn't such a bad
thing. Cops usually have deviced known as RDD's ( Radar Detector
Detectors ) which can alert them that you are using one. All detectors
are undetectable by the VG2 units but if they are running Spectras
your going to be in trouble with any other detector besides the STI.
This is what I suggest:
Whistler Pro 58: ( for your Budget ) Very Good Detector
Beltronics 955: ( Outstanding Detector ) Really like this model !
Beltronics STI: ( Complete Stealth )
I hope this helps.......

Thanks for the suggestions so far. Let me clarify again, it's not for me and not in the US. I don't think they use RDDs there in the UAE, but who knows. No laser is used there, jammers are out of the question. Looks those LEOs are lazy or don't like being out in the sun. All speed patroling is automated so far, I doubt that will change.
Browsing around and networking with friends/colleagues there have been dead ends. Speed cams use weak radar signals, turning off bands helps improve range - from what I've gleaned from our friends Down Under. So the idea is to first figure out what they use there, then get the right one. Or get one to find out the freqs *and* selectable bands.
Or just go with a GPS system and 'locate' the traps and put in proximity alerts. Right now I am leaning towards the GPS option. But I thought I'd tap into the collective wisdom/knowledge here.
The reason for not listing Whistlers is becasue I know so little about them. I looked some up. Looks like the XTR-425/XTR-560/Euro 948 models may be it (948 can't turn off bands though, but I couldn't find the manual). Not the Pro series for sure.

Thanks SAS.
I wish the 985/990i offered the opposite of AccuSweep. Or just be able to tune into only specific freqs within the Ka range.

Yep, the 990i has selectable "narrow" freqs.
I think that would be the best way to go in this case, on that budget...

EDIT: I see what you mean for the 990i, I missed it the first time. This feature is available in Travel mode.
