Default *sigh* Best radar detector investment?

Ok, so here's the dilemma. I bought a Bel 985 two years ago for $200 (a lot of money IMO) and now there's POP that I have to defend against, so I have to get a new detector.

Should I invest a lot of money into a higher end Bel, or go for something cheaper like the Whistler 58 (Same internals as the 73)? Basically the question is how long will it be before cops change to a different radar system like they did with POP. If it's going to be four years or more before standards change then I'll have no problem plunking down $200-$300 for a detector that will last, but if it's just going to be for 2 years like my Bel 985, I might just go with the Whistler.

I know I'm asking for something like a prophecy, but please just give me your best guess or input.

Go with a valentine v1 they can be upgraded I also belive the x50 can too. They are a little pricey but worth their weight in gold!!

Do you know if they are using pop in your State/area??

Yeah, that's one thing that I was thinking about. The top of the line Bels support a "reprogrammable microprocessor." But my Bel 985 also says that it's software upgradable, but that was and is a COMPLETE gimmick. I'm very hesitent to trust these claims of upgradability.

No idea. I live in Ohio, but I have a case of wanderlust. Eventually I plan on taking some time out and going on a massive road trip out west (like the Rockies). So having a POP compatible detector can only do me good.

Keep your BEL 985 it is still a top of the line detector but Ohio mainly uses Laser and Radar and the favor laser so don't worry about POP. you should worry about Laser so i would suggest a laser jammer or other laser counter measures

Yea if you keep your current detector & buy a laser shield + some veil from Roy you'd probably be pretty safe however if you can afford it go with one of the big three

What about if I decide to do a road trip? Just this last spring break I did a road trip passing through Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New York. Pretty soon I may decide to head out west somewhere like Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, and Colorado.

I relly wouldn't be worrying about POP if your choice for a detector would be one thats not so good....If you want to have a detector with POP don't go cheap get either the BEL rx55, BEL 995, Exscort 8500 x50 or BEL rx65.

An officer can't issue a ticket using POP mode also at the 2003 SML test the BEL 985 alerted to POP even though it was not designed to

But you don't hve to worry about POP just yet so don't worry

Hmmm... okey doke. Sounds good. I am a bit worried about the whole "cop can't issue you a ticket with POP" thing. I've heard that some don't read the manuals and issue tickets anyway, and in court they just have to deny that they used POP to ticket you.
