Default Need something for my car.. Can I get an opinion?

Hey quick into.. Just joined. I'm also ArrizX on computerfourms.org with almost 13,000 posts and being a mod.

    Anyways....................

    I have a 1991 Mercedes Benz 190E, and a bumpin sound system.

Well, the problem is that if the cops can hear my sound system in their car, they are legally able to write be a ticket for sound pollution. Once reason I want the radar detector. To keep me aware. Not that I dont look, just so I have enough warning to turn it down before its too late.

Secondly, I don't unnecessarily speed, as I just go faster then the speed limit to get to where I want to go faster. Nothing reckless or stupid. Just anywhere from the limit to about 7 over.

I'm just looking for something that will keep me in check with the saying "Better safe then sorry".

And i'm 16 so I cant afford like a Valentine1 or anything. So its gotta be decently priced.

Wow you have a 190e !!!! My first car was a 190e show car with a huge competition Sound Quality system in it. A radar detectoir is not a cop detectgor I had many tickets for sound pollution as well as illegal lighting on my 190e....It was a cheap enough fine i could pay for it. In the town i would cruise i would drive down main with medium stereo and if no cops i would go again full blast. My volvo has extremely load system stock and with the added amp cops still don't pull me over. But I don't have the lights or sound system My 190e had....

I would suggest for a radar detector either the Whistler pro 58 or 73 of BEL v965 other than that not worth it...

BTW if you want a all weather car cover for a 190e or a 17" Giovanna Barletta wheels let me know

Here is the link to pictures of my late 190e

at those small speeding numbers you wont need the absolute best........ but like Rob said, its not a cop detector, so it wont help of he's not operating RADAR and just happens to hear you coming

and even then if you keep it up all the time hearing the RD over the system will become a problem, so you might want a unit that has an option of an offboard speaker for more volume... and for that the ones that come to mind are Escorts and Beltronics, V1 maybe, but they dont sell their own unit, but im sure you can use the Escort speaker......... but you can get away with some sort of cheaper Bel with a earphone jack

anything less than one of the top 4 and people like us will make fun of you from now on. dont disgrace the car by throwing some junk in there. you can obviously afford a real detector. buy the new 9500i. it will fit nicely.

^^ X50 is plenty good enough, and its ALOT cheaper, and who knows, maybe he threw all his cash into the system........ never assume

there he even said it himself, he cant afford a V1 or anything like that, so that leaves out V1, STI, AND the 9500i

V995 is more than good enough, but at that point id spend that little bit extra for an X50 Red

Gees, he just said that he can't afford an expensive RD, so why even mention the top ones????

I would go with a lower end bell that has a headphone jack so that you can plug it into an external speaker. if you have a loud system (which you do or cops wouldn't worry about you), you wont be able to hear it with just the normal speaker that comes with it.

Pro 58 or 73 is a good choice for $150

Honestly, I'd save up a little - maybe postpone the upcoming purchase of a piece of AV equipment and divert those funds, temporarily, to your RD purchase.

But if that delay is unacceptable (and again, I would like to say that this little bit of sacrifice may pay out in the long run), I would sacrifice filtering for detection.

Since your utmost concern is one of avoiding citations, I would trade-off a bit of falsing for a unit that will alert reliably and at good range.

Additionally, due to the volumes that your AV system undoubtedly generates, I would look heavily into which unit provides good VISUAL alerts, and furthermore install the detector in a location that allows it to be in DIRECT LINE-OF-SIGHT to you as you are operating your vehicle, to insure that you see the alerts.
