I understand how IO is activated with a pistol type gun (with the trigger), but with mounted ones in cars (where the antennas are separate pieces) what does an officer have to do to make IO turn on?

Either a switch on the front of the unit or a handheld remote (wired in most cases, though some newer units have wireless remotes similar to your TV set).

I know some equipment, such as the MPH K-55 X-band radar device, use a wired remote control and others, such as the MPH BEE III K-band device (w/POP) come w/a wireless remote control.
The Stalker Dual Series use a wireless remote, much like you would use for your TV set! The new Stalker II Ka handheld also has a wireless remote. I suppose you can set it on the sidewalk on a tripod to really surprise other drivers!

Using either a corded remote or a wireless remote depending on the unit.
So, when they hit it, does it stay on until they turn it off again?
Depends on the unit. K-55 uses a toggle switch, flip it one way for front, the other way for rear, and center for off (standby). So they hit the switch to start transmitting and flip it back to center to stop. The Stalker ATR's remote uses a button and it toggles (once to xmit, again to standby). But there may be some units that stop transmitting when the button is released (generally handheld triggers work this way).Originally Posted by asianfire
In fact, the Stalker ATR has *3* ways to trigger the radar: 1) by depressing the trigger on the handle (in handheld mode)--in this case, it transmits as long as the trigger is held; 2) by pressing an xmit/hold button on the panel; this button is a toggle (once to start and once to stop), usually this is used in a dash-mount configuration for constant-on use; and 3) a xmit/hold button on the remote; this works the same as the one on the panel; it is a toggle as well.
