Thread: California laws

    Default California laws

I'm new to this and I have a radar detector that I believe is obsolete but i've seen some cops using the KA band. I have also seen many people with the red light camera protectors (the license plate covers) so i was wondering if anyone knows where I can find or if someone personal experience using such things in San Diego county. I live near orange county but still in San Diego county too I think it would be state laws though?? If its federal and anyone can it would be awesome (I doubt it though) so if anyone knows the California laws on these such things and possibly opinions on what I should use in this area and since I'm unfamiliar with police radar bands and such so i don't know what they use here and I believe the cameras are above ground here. I will look forward to your post and i thank you for even reading my post

Any of the top 3 RDs (V1, Bel, Escort) will be good. Just depends on what your needs are and where you drive.

For the Red Light cameras get yourself a NavAlert. I just got one and they are great. You can update it every 14 days or so. It will tell you when you come up to a signal that has a camera. I drive mostly in the LA county area. Go look at Roy's page and read on it.

As for the covers for the license plate they are not legal in California so you take the chance of getting fined. That's why the NavAlert is a lot better.

Detectors are legal in Cali. Plate covers are not. I had one for awhile and got a hefty fine for it. I don't know if they really work or not ... I never got a camera ticket while using it, but I've never gotten one without it either.

CHP use Ka most of the time, but also laser and the occasional K. K is more common with the sheriffs and city cops. X & POP3 are not used.

For a detector, get an X50. It's excellent for the city. The V1 will drive you crazy in the city unless you cripple it, which sort of defeats the purpose.

I drive with my tailgate down on my truck, and have no front plate. I would think that the tailagate would block the plate completely from the cameras. Plus i heard it helps with fuel economy on the highway.

About the fuel economy, your wrong. Mythbusters did an experiment on it. It turns out that a pocket of air get trapped when the tailgate is up. This pocket of air then forces other air to streamlin over the top of the car. What this means is that the back tailgate not only porduces no excess drag but also allows the air to flow over the rear of the car in a much smother fashion.

Back in the 80's, one of my friends and I took his dads nissan truck out on the highway and did some experiments with the gate up and down. With the gate up, it did about 95 mph, with the gate down, it did about 104. We used to speed all over in that truck, and it always went faster with the gate down. One of my co workers told me the mythbusters story too, and i told him my results. I dont know how scientific our experiment was, but it made almost a 10 mph difference.
