Default I need some advice on a radar detector.

I live in South Eastern CT and am looking to get a radar detector. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to get for the type of speed guns commonly used in my area?

Is is it possible to get a good one for under $100?

    Thanks for all advice!

Depends on what it takes to satisfy you. If you expect to hear an alert prior to seeing every cop running constant on radar. A RD for under 100 bucks probably isn't going to do it. Look at the Pro 58 from Whistler. Not a bad little detector for the money

NICE NAME BY THE WAY Bet you won't be on too long.

Get yourself a Beltronics Vector 940. That is what you need.
A cheap detector is just that " Cheap ". The Beltronics Vector
line as well as some of the Whistlers are good mid range detectors.
If your going to go Whistler, get a Pro 78.

Thanks for your help, suggestions, and links! I have a Best Buy gift card so I was hoping to get it there. Are any of the models they have available suitable?

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....sortfilter.jsp

What are basic features that I should make sure it has at minumum?

I live in a small town where LEO's hide around corners and at school parking lots and such and I primarily just want something that will alert me with enough time to drop my speed if nessecary. I'm not concerned with look or extra fancy features.

    Thanks Again!

STAY AWAY FROM COBRA. You are wasting your money if you get one.

The only detector that I can think of that Best Buy carries would be the Escort 8500 X50.
As was said in a post above, that is out of your Price range. The X50 will run you
$299.00 but in my opinion is worth every Penny. I have an X50 and love it.

Also, like stated above stay away from COBRA's. These detectors are
junk !!!! You'll be wasting your money if you buy a cobra.

Another thing, Don't be fooled by these Rocky Mountain Radar Jammers.
They do not work. We have proved it over and over. Just ask anyone.

Here are some features you need to look for.

Digital Signal Processing ( Very Important )
Auto Sensitivity mode ( Automatically reduces false alarms )
Programming Mode ( Allows customization )
Selectable Sensitivity Modes ( Highway, City, Auto )
Resolution Modes ( Lets you adjust the Brightness of the Display )
Matrix display with LEDs ( Better Screen Quality )
Multiple laser sensors ( Front and Rear )
Mute & AutoMute ( AutoMute: after a few beeps, it automatically mutes )
Completely immune to VG-2 ( Radar Detector Detectors ) Yep they exist

Things such as 360 degree detection are gimmicks so don't pay
any attention to that. Radar bounces off structures so thats what
    they are really saying.

Also POP and KU are not really that important so don't make
your decision solely off that. In fact KU isn't even in the US yet
    and probably will never be.

100% of CT State speed traps I've seen in the past 2-3 years are laser, and plenty in SE CT. No detector at any price is going to help you there.

You might best spend that $100 on a can of laser veil, and perhaps a cheap detector with decent laser detection mounted low, and hope you are lucky.

These aren't things that are NEEDED.

Digital signal processing - honestly - they all do now.
Auto Sensitivity - not really REQUIRED, but not bad.
Programming mode - you can't get one that has a decent program amt under $100.
Selectable modes - find me one that doesn't
Resolution / Matrix display - these are visual and are unneeded
Multiple laser sensors - does anyone not have this?
AutoMute - not needed, only mute is neccessary and is standard on all
Immune to VG-2, you find me a state still running vg-2, and I'll find it necessary. Plus, he's in a legal state anyway.
