    Default Just saying hello...

Hi, new member here hoping to get a radar detector soon. I've been lurking here for a few days searching and reading old posts, lots of good info and frankly I will probably go overboard and get a jammer and VEIL and some other stuff now that your website has introduced me to them. I'm sure I will have some questions for you all soon.

I live in Virginia, just across the bridge from Washington D.C., and as most of you already know, radar detectors are illegal here. In reading through past posts I've seen a lot of people state opinion that Virginia residents shouldn't use radar detectors because they're "illegal". I'm confused by this, isn't SPEEDING illegal too? If so then aren't we all simply discussing how to break the law and get away with it? And if that's true, then what is wrong with me concealing my RD in VA?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not the judgmental type. I don't care if you speed and/or use a radar detector. Those questions are just for the hypocrites. I look forward to learning more about this and getting my setup sqaured away, with a little help from you folks. Thanks!

welcome m8, detectors being illegal isnt such a big thing, hanging a piss on the side of the road is illegal but we all do it, drinking under age is illegal but we all did it.

Hope u get alot of info on here and have fun

    Welcome!

Most of the time I see people urging others not to use a detector where it is illegal, they are specifically talking about places like Canada and Europe where the fines are enormous. If you get caught with a detector in VA it's something like $40 (unless it changed) and you get to keep it. In most other places the fine can be in the thousands and you lose your detector. Ouch.

You're right, this is the situation especially in Austria, Switzerland and France.

I think the fine is around 95 with court fees which you must pay with the fine. But the actual RDD ticket is around 40 bucks

    Welcome CyberSEAL!

The other members are correct it is a $40 if you get busted and you don't have to go to court you can pre-pay it with a $55 processing fee which cost the same as the court fee if you go to court. I've heard of some jurisdictions charging $56 for processing fee so it would be $95 or $96 total. But you shouldn't have to worry about that once you get a setup and the detector can't be seen from outside the vehicle.

    CyberSEAL,

Based on your location you will need VEIL and a laser jammer since Arlington County PD only use laser. They like to hide behind parked cars or pretend like they are parking meter enforcement and laser people. Also ACPD like to setup up at a bottom of a hill.

Welcome aboard CyberSeal. I'm a "V1 lover" but I won't push you around too hard. It's a great little site Roy has going here.

You should be ok in Virginia as long as your detector isn't visible from outside, at least until they start using Spectre down the road... hmm should I push the V1 with its concealed display for this purpose? hehe...
